| Dubbed by NASA a “successful failure,” Apollo 13 was intended to be the third manned mission to the moon. An Oxygen tank rupture mid-flight forced the crew to abort the mission and begin a tricky, dramatically difficult return to earth. Tom Hanks plays Commander James Lovell, the speaker of the famous, often misquoted, line “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” The film, adapted from the book Lost Moon by James Lovell and Jeffery Kluger, captures the transitional moment in American history when NASA was still shooting for the moon even as the American public was losing interest in the space program. The Apollo 13’s catastrophe and eventual return to earth, in fact, briefly reinvigorated public interest as the world watched the unfolding crises on their television screens. History truly comes alive in this film. Apollo 13 captures every tense, nerve-racking moment and, even knowing the outcome of these events, the audience can’t help but be sucked into the drama. Apollo 13 won the Oscar for Best Film Editing and Best Sound and was nominated for seven others, including Best Picture. - Ann Horak | ||
