One of the most influential and highly regarded science fiction films, Forbidden Planet was the first time the prestigious MGM studio released a space film and it did so with its characteristic top-of-the-line production values. Lavished with a large ($1.9 million) budget and produced in color and CinemaScope, the screenplay by Cyril Hume is loosely based on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. In 2200 A.D., the United Planets Cruiser C-57D lands on Altair IV to investigate what became of an Earth colony established twenty-years earlier and discover a terrible secret. The special effects, model work, production design and set decoration were all state of the art for 1956. The film also contains the first all electronic music score and introduced viewers to the iconic “Robby” the Robot. - JD
